Kestrel, New Orleans Mask, Destin Vacations and several trips to the gulf coast and stolen truck. It's been a hot and fast summer, and I'm looking forward to some cooler weather and more birds for my new Canon 500mm f4 IS ii
After spending the hot morning with the Dow Skimmers, I headed over to Brazos Bend State Park. The heat was starting to get to me so I decided to take it easy in the shade with this Little Blue Heron (immature) and a Yellow-crowned night Heron feeding on tadpoles and bugs On he way out of the park, I heard a Painted Bunting and I was able to call him over to the truck for a few shots from the window.

In 1968, 38 black skimmers flew into Dow Texas Operations' Plant A and landed in an oyster shell parking lot. Then they just made themselves at home.

Thanks to the vision and passion of some Dow employees the former parking lot was turned into a permanent nesting ground for the birds. Starting in 1984, Dow has hosted an open house to give everyone an opportunity to view the largest skimmer nesting ground inside an industrial complex.

For most of the year, skimmers use beaches from the southern coast of the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean all the way to New York, but in the spring each year, they flock together to mate and lay eggs. The skimmer scouts look for the Dow site in April. During May, the lot fills up with adult birds which stay until the end of August to fledge their young. The 2003 nesting season had 1,500 adult skimmers (400 breeding pairs) producing 300 fledglings.

State parks are getting smart and setting up water features (not working when I was there) for birds which bring in the birders and photographers.

After spending 20 minutes and not seeing much, I finally spotted this painted bunting that had no problem with we sitting next to him. I spend about an hour with him then took an hour break in the river. Then I spent a few more hours taking 2 CF cards full of shots.

I'll be back next year!

PS: Texas Parks and Wildlife: Put in a small cabins along the river... I'll stay!

The bird was first discovered by James Clark and Don Jeane on 4/18/2012 and sighting continue just inside sanctuary as of 4/26/2012.

I arrived on Tuesday (4/24/2012) afternoon and only a few cars with about 10 birders in the park mainly at the drip. Late in the afternoon I was able to get some one on one time with the Tropical and the pair was moving about the brush not paying any attention to my presence.

After awhile the pair joined up for what appeared to me as a mating attempt with the tropical in the receiving position. But the attempt only lasted 3-4 seconds, so it may have just been some funtime.

However, the next day I did observe the Tropical sitting on their nest for about 10 minutes, so who knows...

Lots more shots HERE for those who are interested.
I've yet to hear of a major fallout, but many locations are reporting a fair amount of birds.

Many Rose-breasted Grosbeaks in Quintana Neotropical Bird Sanctuary along with a lone Dickcissel kept the birding activity exciting, however it wasn't until the last hours of the day when I picked up a Prothonotary Warbler, Red-Eyed Vireo and Yellow-throated Vireo.

Heading out to Sabine Woods Sanctuary tomorrow afternoon to try and catch the Tropical Mockingbird.

Hoping to find a better shot of the Cerulean Warbler and Painted Bunting along the way...

While having over 23,000 followers is cool, it just not personal enough. G+ followers really are not followers, they are mainly just new users that circled me because I'm in a well known photography group. Just not the same as twitter and a blog.

So here's one my favorite shots from a few weeks ago of a red-tailed hawk that allowed me to walk up on him out out near Attwater Prairie Chicken National Wildlife Refuge.

It's spring migration, and I hoping to head out to the coast next week for some new warblers when the weather changes.

Some nights it's very clear and others I can hardly hear it. I'm starting to think that the wind is playing a part in the strength of the hum signal.

Here's a capture using AndroSpectro over about 6 hours at night. The 35Hz signal is clear throughout the night. The other higher frequency noise is my snoring :)
HUM Update 3/16/2012 Coming and going
The Hum is wasn't present at 11pm CDT, however at 11:15pm CDT for about 10 minutes it returned and is now gone.

This morning I passed a new oil well being drilled in the oil well fields about 3miles away... This afternoon it appeared that they had stopped drilling.... Now im wondering if maybe the drilling down in the earth is causing the hum. That would explain why sometime its noticed and sometimes not... Going to drive by the site if the hum returns again.

Its very quite tonight with the loudest frequency at 40hz i can hear a faint hum again, but not major

HUM Update 3/16/2012 1am Its Back
started increasing after after 10pm, and i can hear it again this afternoon. its still not very intense, but it may be back to the annoying level tonight. The peak frequency is still around 40Hz

HUM Update 3/15/2012 10pm CDT HUM is GONE!

The wind is 0, the crickets are loud and the HUM is almost gone tonight. I can faintly hear what sounds like The HUM way off in the distance in fluctuation, and its not longer pounding between my ears.

The Spectrum in also now showing the loudest signal at about 40Hz instead of 29Hz.

I'm not sure if the wind has made the difference, or someone has made a change somewhere, but for now The HUM has gone dormant.

Finally, now maybe I'll get some sleep.

More to come..
HUM Update 3/15/2012 8am CDT

Finally was able to hear The HUM outside the house.

I drove down to Sunny Carter parking lot which is on the back side Ellington Airport and turnoff the car, and immediately was able to hear to The Hum in my car. And the 29Hz signal was louder than I've see it.

I then drove down the street on Ellington Field close to the Tower and NEXRAD Cone, I detected a new very strong signal at 10Hz. This is the first time I've seen a 10Hz signal. I also drove around Ellington Field, and I was able to hear the Hum.

Today I drove downtown recording, and the 29Hz signal is still present, however I don't hear any Hum yet.

Two new questions:
1. What is the 29Hz signal?
2. What is the 10Hz on Ellington Field?

HUM Update 3/14/2012 10pm CDT

Getting closer now. I took a detail look at 130Hz and below and was able to identify the AC unit which eliminated most all of the source HUM. Now it looks like HUM is in the 30-40Hz range which was my initial though when trying to recreate the HUM using a tone generator.

The Spectrum Analyzer is showing that 29Hz is also the loudest sounds in the room, so it appears that we are getting close to a HUM frequency...

Next step, start looking for places where the 29Hz is the loudest... Hopefully this will lead to the source.. Unless the source is vertical :)

Update: The 29Hz signal is loudest on the west side of the house, the side facing Ellington Field.

HUM Update 3/14/2012 3pm CDT It's Noisy Down there!

Spent the day investigating new Android Apps for spectrium analysis of my HUMing problem.

I found AndroSpectro which is the easy app to use and it shows a great amount of detail in real-time. It turns out that not only are there are several Android apps, my Android phone is much better at detecting audio through the phone speaker than the Ipad, specially frequencies under 400hz.

Here's a 5 minute sample spectrum from 0-200hz, and you clearly can see several static frequency bands.

I've just started to identify some of the bands, however the one that's most interesting are the two the bands around 116hz which is the top larger band at the same frequency as yesterday.

So far I counted 16 bands under 200hz and hopefully I'll be able to eliminate most of these bands and finally get to the root cause of this irritating humming noise!

Clearly see a Plane Flyover at 3/4 the way to the right

3/13/2012
After several years thinking I was going nuts with this nightly low frequency humming noise, I finally Googled humming noise and discovered that people from all over the world have been reporting the same "distant diesel engine" humming noise. I also found the Wikipedia page The HUM

The humming noise is only heard indoors at night or morning when the house is relatively quiet. There is just too much other noise outdoors (i'm guessing)

So I set out to try and record the signal. After several failed attempts trying to record on my ipad at different location in my room, I finally caught the noise in the middle of my room. I noticed that I have have two surround sound speakers on the walls pointing to down to the middle of the room... I need to verify if maybe these speakers (that are unplugged) may be picking up the hum... somehow...

I tried listing to the the sound file, however I couldn't really hear anything... So I ran the the audio though SpectraPLUS software hoping to listen the the HUM, and BANG there it was visually on the Spectrum at 116-123hz And while listening to the audio and watching the 3D surface, you can clearly hear the The Hum using audio ear plugs

So, NOW I'm 100% convinced that there is a HUM, now I just have to find the source!

My YouTube video isn't that great, for some reason snagit jitters the video and it didn't record audio. I need to find a better way to record the cool graphs and audio, but if you install the software you can see it for yourself clearly.

If you listen to the sound file, you will hear some of a chirps of some insect, and some pops which is just my moving on my bed, however its very difficult to hear the hum without seeing the 3D surface spectrum in realtime.

I also see some other signal at 150hz and 200hz, but I'm not sure if they are related to the hum; from the 3D view, it sure looks like they are related to each other...

More to come!

While observing this morning, the two eagles didn't mind my location that was over 50 yards away to the West. The female stayed on the nest all morning and the male entered the nesting area to chase off a coopers hawk that came a little too close.

I'm a little concerned about their location. They have made their nest right in the middle of a subdivision and their tree nest is directly accessible by the public via the" green belt" drainage area. While there is plenty of observation area, care should be taken when entering the area. Hopefully someone will tape off a 50 yard warning area to prevent people from disturbing these nesting Eagles.

After launching the new Kayak, I headed towards the back waters of Horsepen Bayou which turned out to be about a 20 minute paddle. As the shoreline narrowed, so did the critter activity with gators, and large alligator gars splashing up the water. Tri-colors and Great White herons were actively feeding on passing shad. Deer were busy walking with their fawns along the dense shoreline. A magical place so close to home.

I managed to slowly pull within 20 feet of this tri-colored heron for about 30 minutes. He was busy feeding and the shad, taking one ever minute or so. Keeping still, several other Herons landed all around and fought for the best feeding positions among the fallen branches and stumps.
Dentist have all the cool tools.I walked in to the orthodontist this morning to get a braces xray evaluation for my daughter.

I totally expected the usual black and white xray of the mouth, the one that you have a hard time making out one tooth from the other.

However....

My jaw literally hit the floor when the assistant fired up the xray viewing application within minutes after taking the xray. 3D images like I've never seen before on a 42 inch screen were the coolest images I have every seen. And then assistant starting moving my daughters images in three dimensions including zooming in and out all at the tough of a mouse.

The assistant let us view the images for awhile and I quickly snapped several pics using my g2x's phone camera which turned out much better than the ones they emailed me...

The Dr came in an did a 5 minute eval and 5 minutes later I had a 20 month and $5k estimate to look at... After insurance, I was looking at only $1800 which seemed like a bargain from the stories that I have heard

The 3D Xray sold their product, no doubt! So much so I decided to signup to get MY MUG xrayed next week for a braces eval.

We live is some interesting times! Welcome to the future, Wecome to 2011!
After about 30 minutes, the show is all but over except for a few stragglers. Dang if I wasn't late this morning and only got about 5 minutes of activity before the day and light ended. After driving 120 miles round trip I was expecting the day to be a waste, but to my surprise a few shots hit their target.

Also found my first Immature Little Blue Heron along the Quintana levy. Bonus!
While photographing these skimmers, I took several breaks from the camera just watch them as they float effortlessly above the still waters many times banking back and forth corralling their prey.

Black Skimmers have a light graceful flight, with steady beats of their long wings. They feed usually in large flocks, flying low over the water surface with the lower mandible skimming the water for small fish, caught by touch by day or especially at night. They spend much time loafing gregariously on sandbars in the rivers, coasts and lagoons they frequent.
This weekend almost all the shallow inland lakes that were full of water last year are now completely dry and the shorebirds have left the area.

The canal that run along both sides of the end of Hwy 288 in Quintana is now only a shallow mud pit, however several waterbirds are still skimming the shallow water for small fish.

If you are looking for an amazing place to photograph black skimmers, this is the place to do it just after sunrise. The skimmers are spending a few hours after sunrise skimming the area which is only 20 yards wide and about a mile long. Photographing skimmers is sport like no other bird. They will glide without a flap for several hundred feed one inch above the water with just there lower beak skimming. Getting a great shot takes a fast frame DSLR and fast focus lens and the right light. This location should be perfect for a few more weeks.

After spending an hour and 800 frames on skimmers(stay tuned for the black-skimmer pics), I turned to some other local shorebirds including this Tri-colored heron that allow me to photograph him feeding on mullet for 20 minutes at a distance of about 20 feet. In order to get these shots I literally had lay my sholders in the mud with my feed 3 feet above resting on a large dainage culvert. As I was shooting in the high grass, I noticed small crocodile pop his head out of the water about 60 feet away. Not a great feeling when you have your head inches from the mud line.

I was reminded of the story that a fellow bird photographer(with one leg) told about how he was photographing birds in Brazil. While he was framing a bird next to a river, a gator snapped him up and drug him into the river. His guides were able to pull him out, but not after loosing his leg.

While photographing this tri-colored, I kept smelling what smelled like rotting animal... Well after getting up from the shoot I looked over across to the other side of the large culvert, and there lay a large crock almost complete decomposed.

I also took this coyote shot in the same location that I was photographing just an hour before.

One of the benefits of having a "fast lens" like the canon 50mm f1.4 is the ability to take photos at night or low light without flash. This gives the photographer a way to capture the moment without disturbing the subjects with a bright light.
Several of these warblers filled the trees in the Quintana Neotropical Bird Sanctuary the day after the front passed over the island.

A few other shots of a Magnolia Warbler, but the afternoon was mainly spent trying to get a clear shot of the fast moving Bay-breasted Warbler.

While searching for warblers in the Quintana sanctuary, a hummingbird landed just a few feet away in full afternoon sunlight. It took many shots just to get the exposure correct, but luckily this guy didn't mind a closeup shot. After what seemed like several minutes, an American redstart spooked him off..
Done chasing pavements!OK, enough with the little birds (my first year), warbler season may be over and it's time to put a <strike>chicken </strike>steak on to BBQ and get back to some real birds.

It's been interesting chasing itty-bitty birds with 600mm of lens, not knowing exactly what the mini mouse sized bird looks like until after the shot, and tip toeing on pins an needles around birders crowds. But now that the shore birds are back in town, it's time to stretch out and get back to the big birds for the next 9 months.

I wasn't expecting it to be so difficult to even get a view of a warbler, much less get a shot under the right conditions. Hats off to small bird photographers, it much harder and lots more work than the larger birds. Guess I'm going to need to take a week off during next migration, because if you blink and you'll miss the passover.

As I was leaving Quintana after spending the day chasing ONE warbler in the no shade Quintana Sanctuary, I drove past what seemed like an ocean of birds feeding in the shallow waters.

After seeing a small girl wade in the inch deep waters and pass only feet away from 100's of Skimmers skimming, Avocets, and Reddish Egrets feeding, Plovers and Sanderlings, I jumped out, took my shoes off and waded with my airbed into the middle of the once filled lagoon.

Shot wildly for the few minutes of light left.

Give me a pair of waders, and acres of open wetlands with not a sole in sight!

But I did get my 1st look and shot at the red eyed bronzed cowbird yesterday!

Done chasing pavements! (Well at least until the next warbler fallout :)

For several weeks now is has been real slow and lots of work to even find a warbler to shoot. Well the skies opened up on Friday afternoon and provided a slew of migrants across the Texas coast. Still not the fallout that I was expecting, however it's getting close.

I choose to spend most of my time in a small and not very well developed sanctuary on the far west end of Galveston call Dos Vacas Muertas Bird Sanctuary It's probably not the best location for bird watchers given that other sancturaties in the area have better amminities, however this quiet less traveled location is great for a few protographers.

I added over 27 new photographed species to my list of birds taking me to over 142 this week! Not bad for a rookie if I say so myself.
